Created through the combined effort of Richard Bandler and John Grinder, Neuro-linguistic programming or NLP for short, is a technique intended to understand and transform human behavior-patterns.
Staying true to its name, the technique involves the direct connection between the neurological and our internal and external language patterns. Or, to put it in simpler terms, it uses the power that our words and language has over our minds in order to influence them.
This is why most people mistake NLP for hypnosis. However the two are quite different, even though both techniques make use of the thought-patterns stored in the subconscious and even borrow procedures from one another at times.
The link between our minds and words is formed through the process of conditioning. If you remember, conditioning is the process that Pavlov used to train his dogs. Every day, before feedings his dogs he would ring a bell making the dogs associate the bells with food. After a decent period of time, Pavlov could make the dogs drool without any food, just by ringing the bell.
The same happens with your words and thoughts. When you are feeling good you tend to use certain verbal and body language. Over time the same language gets linked to feeling good and you can use it to bring back those feelings.
To see just how strong the link between your body language and your feelings is, just take a pen and place it horizontally in your mouth, pushing your cheeks a bit back. This is probably making you feel happy because, ever since you were born, whenever you're happy you smile and that effortlessly pushes your cheeks back a bit. Now, as the pen is doing the same thing, those feelings tend to be brought back.
Since NLP can be used to influence our minds and our minds can influence our bodies, most practitioners of this approach can find a use for it in every day of a person's life.
It can improve a person's well-being, memory, concentration and help with productivity by reducing procrastination. Even Bandler and Grinder suggested that NLP can be used for disorders such as depression, anxiety, phobias and psychosomatic weight issues.
Furthermore, the best part about NLP is that the approach has existed for over 30 years, giving its practitioners a lot of time to improve, specialize and perfect their skills, enabling you to benefit from their work to the fullest.
