Report on the topic "Emotions' that was discussed at the Mbabane Teen Club with the 13-14 year olds.
This month's Teen Club was all about challenging the Teens to think about emotions and how these emotions might affect the way that they respond to certain situations in their lives. They were asked the question 'what are emotions?' Some teens responded saying that the emotions are feelings that are caused by certain situations which have happened. This led onto a discussion about the fact that emotions can be caused by happiness, joy, love, anger and fear.
This particular topic was also about encouraging the teens to think about what happens when they are consumed by these emotions. There were various responses given by the teens. Some said that they become very violent and end up engaging in fights, some said that they lose their mind and act strangely, whereas some said that they just cry to cool down their emotions, more especially when they are angry.
There was a really excellent reaction to this lesson as the teens were participating well and giving real contributions, especially on the issue of what causes them to be emotional. This was especially evident in their body language and their facial expressions. Having the teens talk about their emotions, sharing how they react in certain situations and having them recognize that these reactions might not be the best solutions, was an encouraging response, especially in a country where people are not used to talking so openly about their feelings.
As a conclusion to the lesson, it was decided that sometimes we are engulfed by our emotions and react positively or negatively, which means that we can end up regretting the actions that we took. We should therefore control our emotions.
We also had a short time of remembrance for Japan, where one of the teen leaders read out a short summary of the devastation caused so far by the Tsunami, and then there was a time of prayer and silence.
