Comparing my imagined freshman year to my actual experience is like comparing a five-star restaurant to McDonalds. The word "disappointment" doesn't quite describe the aching gap that only reality can punch through your stomach. I wish I could say the problem was a bad roommate, a failed exam, or even the butchered attempt to chat up the sexy boy in my mythology class (trust me, that was a mess). But unfortunately, I was the problem.

Horribly misguided self-expectations made college seem like a landslide of imperfection. In high school daydreams, I developed the myth of Anna 2.0. I thought I would shrug off the plain-old high school me and emerge from the Bishop Guertin High School cocoon a drop-dead gorgeous party-animal taking campus by storm.
I would never flirt with the cute boy next to me in World History but I'd offer myself grand consolations. "It'll be fine in college. I'm going to talk to all the boys. Actually, I'm ONLY going to talk to boys. That's it. It's the womanizer life for me."

Instead of writing notes in my Biology class, I'd imagine myself as the mitochondria of every college party (get it?). By then, I'd look like Beyonc'e and show up to parties with boys on each arm. I refused to believe that I would spend my weekends like I did in high school: eating, reading, eating, doing homework, watching TV, and eating. "YOUTH ADVENTURE CAMP WITH ANUVUTI INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZED BY YES! CLUB NEPAL" In a jungle forest in Nepal, a 20-meter long rope bridge hangs tied between two trees. Clutchinga rope tied above, students of Kathmandu's St. Mary's High School slowly walk on the rope beneath their feet. Grappling with gravity, the students find their balance and new self-confidence with each step. 72 students took part in the one-day YES! Club Nepal Youth Adventure Camp at the Bajrabarahi Temple near Kathmandu, Nepal on 22 October, 2011. The Art of Living YES! Club of Nepal recently partnered with Anuvuti International, a provider of outdoor experiential-learning education.THE ADVENTURE BEGINS Itwas 7 a.m. when the Anuvuti facilitators split the group into four teams. Brain twisters and physical strength challenges were waiting for them deep in the forest. During the Spider Web game, team members had to be inserted through openings in a 'spider web' of ropes without touching it. "I had to be very straight, very aware, it was a game of being in the present moment," says Mamta Kafle, a volunteer from The Art of Living. "I'd never been in an Adventure camp," says Aishwarya Singh, one of the participants. "At first we didn't really work well on the team. We had some fights with the team members, but by the end we allgot to know each other, it was really great," Aishwarya says.UNLIKELY GENIUS Aishwarya is both a student and a young media personality. She has been a co-host of "Musicology," an online radio program in Kathmandu. During one of the games, her team was given a task that seemed impossible. A bucket wrapped with 18 ropes was placed slightly higher than another bucket on the ground. The team had to pour the water from the higher bucket to the lower bucket. "Since it was tied with ropes in a circular way, it was just impossible to lift the bucket and pour the water," explains Aishwarya. After a long silence, a young girl gave the winning solution. "The group was surprised when her teacher said she always fails in physics," recalled Aishwarya. "And she was the one who came up with the idea. This camp was a success because it showed teachers that students have their own capability, own uniqueness, and cannot be judged only on the basis of marks."FINDING THEIR REFLECTIONS The day had been full of physical and mental challenges. The students had faced fears of heights, fears of falling and humiliation in front of their classmates. Challenges abound on any given day, but today, the St. Mary's students faced the challenges in celebration. Many felt transformed. In a self-reflection session at the end of the day, the girls got the chance to write about it. "This activity made me realize that I was someone important and special in my own way," says Vaishally Shah, of Class 9 at St. Mary's. "It made me feel proud of my existence for the first time ever." "This was the best part," Aishwarya says. "Most of the time we do not give time to ourselves because we are busy with Facebook and watching TV. And if we ask ourselves the question, 'Who are we?,' we do not know who we truly are." Confidence. Leadership. Teamwork. These were some of the responses from the students when they were asked what they learned. Overcoming fears, better communication. "Basically we are all students, we want to learn something from practical knowledge. It was fun learning to usemy brains. This taught me about leadership skill, teamwork and having fun. Katrina will participate with other teens at the HOBY Conference in the spring of 2012. Katrina was selected through a rigorous process that included input from faculty, students and administrators. She impressed the panel with her poise, confidence and genuine concern for others.
Katrina is a very conscientious student who is involved in many extracurricular activities that she enjoys and values. Among them are the Pre-med Club, Environmental Club, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Model Congress, Science Honor Society and Math Team. An accomplished swimmer, she is also on the EMHS swim team as well as a year-round team at the Long Island Aquatic Club.

From there, I'd look forward to afternoons of television and never ending household chores from my perfectionist parents. Other times, I'd be riding my bike, or reading or collecting stickers which my sister with whom I shared a bedroom. I could handle being an outcast since I had two siblings only a year apart in age each and jobs that filled my time.
By mid-high school, I weighed in the low to mid 200s and stood almost 6 feet tall. Being so large and invisible had a price. I soon learned unlike the small private school where I went to elementary, I no longer even had the couple close friends to pass my time.
For openers we moved from a huge metro city, to a more medium town, where everyone had been born there, and been together in school from kindergarten on. My siblings still hung out with me but their company seemed to come more cheaply and dearly as my new "nerd" status reached greater heights.
One horrible joke in my high school would be the boys comparing girls to dogs as they walked down the hall. I didn't have an ugly face, but was fat enough to earn barks, as I walked to class. It didn't take a rock scientists that especially by the halcyon days of the 1980s, that looks were the female sex's hottest currency: instead of Harriet the Spy Adventures, I'd find myself overtaken by Sweet Valley High nightmares.
In late junior high school I approached one of my other "Fat" classmates only to have her yell: Get away from me!". Years later, I'd see her red-haired, freckled face in a magazine, talking about those teenage battles with anorexia.
As a first hand witness to her constant teasing, I wasn't surprised but wondered "What was wrong with me"?" I couldn't walk into a classroom without someone trying to trip me, or muttering "boom, boom" under their breath. I knew by then, something was very wrong with me, and dieting, exercising since I spent literal hours on my bike, walking, and at the restaurants working on my feet, that nothing was doing anything to touch it.
When my weight went up, my treatment would go down accordingly, as my bowling partner, Stephanie, demonstrated, she'd hang out with me at home but pretend not to know me at school, even though our parents were friends. My sociosexual development slowed to a crawl. I had no interest in makeup or dating and by then had equated all boys with teasing tormentors. Even at 13, I knew things were more dangerous for fat girls who were seen as easy pickings.
I can remember having a full figured friend of my mother at a family pool party, saying You better lose weight, or you'll never get a boyfriend." The message came at a pool party, where I sat forlorn and vulnerable in my bathing suit, with my mother nodding in agreement, I slunk my 14 year old self into the bathroom where I cried for half an hour and wondered aloud why the boys seemed so interested in having girls be so bony?
Periods of lower weight did not cut me a break in the looks department. When that happened, I no longer was called earthquake or Big Mama" but they would switch over to Amazon!"." I had far more hair then other girls, was larger, more muscular and had more oily skin. Being taller, more masculinzed and more aggressive, results of the high androgens racing through my body, it would take almost 15 years to find out why my body did not match those of other high school girls when I discovered the realities of severe polycystic ovarian syndrome along with other endocrine problems. Dirty brown spots starting popping up all over my body, my mother would tell me constantly to wash my neck, not realizing this was a sympton of the hormonal chaos taking over my body. Even as a teen, my periods permanently disappeared, and there was no help. By then I had thought "good riddance to bad rubbish", the doctors never did any tests. They'd just send me home and say Diet!

SUSAN LONG WOMACK - MISS AUBURN 1978
Originally from Macon, Georgia, Susan Womack made her way to Auburn by following in her sister's
footsteps. After visiting friends who attended the university, her final decision was an easy one. While at Auburn, Womack was a member of the Auburn University Concert Choir, President of the School of Education, a member of the War Eagle Girls and Plainsmen and a member of both Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board honor societies.
After graduating with a degree in early childhood education, Womack worked for several years as a school teacher. She has recently retired from working with the non-profit origination Campfire USA. She enjoys playing tennis, teaching a preschool choir at her church and teaching a girls' Bible study at an inner-city school through an organization called Discovery Clubs.
Womack stays connected to Auburn by being a life member of the Auburn Alumni Association with her husband, Greg. They have season tickets to football games, and she believes that nothing can top the experience of watching the eagle fly over Jordan Hare on game day.
"Both of our daughters, Anne and Abby, are Auburn graduates and we really enjoyed going to the games and visiting when they were in school," said Womack. "Abby is married to Holder Nevins who also graduated from Auburn and Anne is engaged to Will Sanford who is an Auburn grad. So our family is truly All In!" ("Picture left used with permission. Womack wants to encourage future Auburn women to soak in every moment that they have on the Plains and to pursue something they are truly passionate about.
"Whether it's forestry or finance, education or entomology, if it is not something that they are truly interested in, they will never be happy working in it," said Womack. "I 'taught' something (dolls, stuffed animals, etc.) from the time I was about 3 years old, and I still love teaching.
ABBY LYNN BOWDEN TIPPINS - MISS AUBURN 1998
Abby Tippins is originally from Enterprise, Alabama, and graduated in 1998 with a degree in public relations. She chose Auburn because of the friendly atmosphere, the excellence in academics and the beautiful campus. Her campus involvement was diverse, but her favorite memories come from her time spent as a Camp War Eagle counselor, where she met her husband Scott.
"We love Auburn so much we decided to live here!" said Tippins. "I enjoy attending many of the sporting events from football games to gymnastics meets, and it's a joy to sip a Toomer's Lemonade any day of the week while strolling downtown with my kids." Tippins was elected after campaigning to increase the freshman retention rates by working with the Freshman Experience Office, now the First Year Experience Office, with the goal of connecting freshmen and activities by informing students of the different opportunities they have to plug in to Auburn. As Miss Auburn, Tippins was able to host the first Miss Auburn Reunion. This traditions still takes place every five years on the Plains.
"Auburn has grown tremendously since I was a student, but it's still breathtakingly beautiful, grounded in tradition and full of lovely people," said Tippins. "My advice to future Auburn women would be to simply enjoy your time as a student. Get involved on campus, and find a healthy balance between school and fun."
MINDY LOUISE STREET - MISS AUBURN 2006
Mindy Street is originally from Hoover, Alabama.
"I grew up an Auburn fan thanks to my grandfather who lettered in football and basketball at API in the early 40s," said Street. "He instilled in me a great love of all things Auburn from the day I was born, so I pretty much always knew I would choose Auburn University for college."
As a student, Street was involved with the Freshman Leadership Program, Freshmen Forum, participated in Greek Sing, and choreographed the 2004 award winning performance, as well as creating a mentoring program at a local elementary school in Auburn. She also placed 2nd runner up at Miss Alabama in 2004.
Street was nominated by Eagle Eye News and campaigned with a platform based around mentoring children in the Auburn community.
"My slogan was 'Mindy Street...The Road to A Better Auburn' by mentoring a child," said Street. "My goal was to increase the percentage of students involved in mentoring programs, as well as encouraging our students to get out in our community and make a difference in the lives of children 0 to 17."
She believes that being an Auburn woman is best described in the Auburn Creed. Street describes herself as an Auburn woman, not only because she loves the university and what it stands for, but also because she truly loves the town and its people.
Staying connected to the university is pretty easy for Street since moving back to Auburn in December of 2009. She went back to school at night to earn her Masters of Education and graduated in December of 2013. Street is a Development Officer in the Samuel Ginn College of Engineering. She serves as an advisor to the social sorority she was active in as a collegian as well as works with the woman serving as Miss Auburn each year. In her free time she enjoys spending time with her family who live locally in Auburn.
