His role model was Ernie Banks, the Hall of Fame member who influenced Darrel's life, he was one of the earlier African Americans to play in the Major Leagues. Darrel was a gifted switch-hitting baseball player and had the opportunity to meet his hero at a banquet when he was 12 in Hammond, Indiana. Banks had heard about Darrel's talent and said, almost jokingly, as he shook his hand, "See you in the Big Leagues, kid."
Ernie Banks Who knew that 9 years later after being drafted #2 by the Cincinnati Reds - Darrel faced Ernie Banks in one of his first Pro games against the Chicago Cubs.
